What to Wear

What you wear can have a huge impact on your photos. Family photos are a special occasion and the wrong clothing can ruin the final image. Here are some simple rules to follow as you plan for your photos to make sure your clothing helps everyone look their best.

  1. Wear clean, unstained clothing that fits well.

    - This may seem obvious but I have had to remove several stains in editing, and ill-fitting clothing has been an issue for several of my clients over the year. Inspect the clothing carefully and make sure everyone TRIES their clothing on prior to the photos.

2 .Dress for the same occasion and same season-

make sure everyone agrees on how casual or formal the outfits should be. When one person in wearing joggers and a t-shirt while another is in a dress or if one person is wearing a tank top while another is in a sweater or jacket- it looks poorly planned.

    3. Avoid- baseball caps

I know that many people feel their best with a baseball cap, so I do allow my clients to wear them. However, I recommend that you seriously consider NOT wearing one. Baseball caps look very casual, and more importantly, they are designed to shade faces. This means that there is no way for the caps to not affect the lighting in the picture.

    4. Avoid- screen print t-shirts

Except for a more casual photo with matching logos/theme- screen print pictures are usually not appropriate for pictures

    5. Be cautious of large or busy prints, stripes

Prints can be great- but should be chosen with care- mixing prints, or wearing unflattering prints or overly busy prints do not photograph well and are not as flattering.

    6. Choose a color scheme of warm jewel tones to coordinate rather than “matching outfits”

    7. Longer Sleeves and skirts Are Better

For family photos, too much skin can be distracting from your face. And even if you have thin or toned arms, long sleeves tend to make all arms look better. Longer skirts can slim and flatter the body, and allow for more freedom with posing.

    8. Don’t forget about the shoes

like your clothing, your shoes should be unstained and fit well. shoes should match the formality of the occasion but also be comfortable and allow for movement and multiple poses.

    9. Be Comfy & Be You

special occasion does not mean that you need to feel uncomfortable- make sure your clothing shows off who you are, what makes you confident, and allows for comfort and movement.

    10. Ask for help and specific suggestions:
